The Apollo Victoria Theatre, London, offers a unique and vast canvas for the creation of front of house signage – visible to hundreds of thousands of daily commuters it is imperative that the design of the sign is not only eye-catching but also that it is complementary to the Grade 1 listed building.
Working alongside the building owners, Live Nation, the Architects, John Muir Associates and the lighting company Hoare Lea Lighting, the whole building was transformed using the innovative and dramatic colour change LED lighting strips to the architectural features of the façade.
The top sign structure at the theatre – a vast 65 square metre canvas was covered with “Wicked” green shimmer disks. Surface mounted to this was a huge circular flexface lightbox with digitally printed face, internal fluorescent illumination (incorporating two switchable circuits to eliminate dark spots due to tube failure). The handcrafted clock face was then added to the perimeter of the lightbox. The title treatment was created using hand formed polished stainless steel letters dressed with reflective vinyl to eliminate shadowing on overcast days.
The sign was then floodlit from beneath to bring the whole display to life. This along with the remainder of the front of house has created a truly stunning sign.
