When Equus booked into The Gielgud Theatre, there was a potential problem. The theatre owners were about to undergo major refurbishment and cleaning of the 101-year-old W. G. R. Sprague designed building.
The Grade II listed façade was in need of a major overhaul and the building was to be scaffolded from top to bottom during these works – the solution was to wrap the entire scaffold in a digitally printed PVC skin. Westminster Council laid down the parameters and to create a statement the whole scaffold would be covered in black with the Equus imagery placed at the parts of the scaffold where the topsign would traditionally be.
Cladding of all exposed scaffolding towers with matt black panelling along with creative floodlighting created a truly dynamic statement.
